QR codes seem to be all the buzz at the moment with many companies using them on their advertisements and even being used on business cards and other promotional material.
I've never seen them used on a TV programme though - until this weekend when I sat down at my parents house and enjoyed The Good Cook. Firstly I have to say I loved the programme. Not just the nice food and simplicity Simon Hopkinson makes it look, but there was some great camera effects never before seen on cooking programmes and some real nice graphics using the simplicity of a really nice script font.
Anyway, back to the QR codes which are shown at the end of each dish for the viewer to obtain more information about the recipes.
Was this clever and the start of something new? Will all programmes soon be displaying QR codes? Will we see our best loved soaps introducing QR codes into their scripts!? Who knows.
All I know is that whilst watching The Good Cook, it took me an hour to explain to my Mother about QR codes. 5 minutes explaining what it was and how it worked, and 55 minutes explaining why her mobile phone didn't have the facility to take a picture and download the information she wanted.
One last point to make, its all very well adding these QR codes to your material, but please make sure they are big enough for cameras to focus in on.
Which begs the question... should they really be used on business cards?
